CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“LJ, I want to come home.” Nika stood up and sat on the sofa. “I know that I probably don’t deserve to, but…”

“You should be here.” He replied. He sat down on the arm of the sofa and glanced down at the floor where their son was playing.

“I don’t really have a reason or excuse.” She said. “I wasn’t thinking and I’m sorry.”

“Just forget that this has anything to do with me Nika, you walked out on our son, how could you do that?” he wanted to know.

“I’m sorry, but I really don’t know what to say.” She answered. “I was just so tired, and I couldn’t breathe.”

“You couldn’t breathe?” he repeated. “What does that even mean?”

“It all just happened so fast, getting pregnant, having Liam, moving to Ames. I guess that I panicked that I wasn’t handling it. I wasn’t. I did it all wrong LJ.” She turned in the seat, and took his hands in hers. “LJ I really am sorry, and I need you to forgive me, please, I need to make this right.”

“Sara, what are you doing?”

Michael walked out from the bathroom and over to the dresser, producing a t-shirt from the top drawer.

“Sara.”

“Sorry, what was that?”

He pulled the t-shirt on and walked over to her. “What are you doing?”

“I wasn’t doing anything.”

“You don’t think its at all weird that you’re standing at the window, waiting for them to get home?” He laughed.

“I’m not doing that.” She turned to look at him and rolled her eyes. “Well ok sure, but I’m just…”

“Excited.” He replied. “I know. But you’ll know precisely when Stuart shows him the bike, because he’s going to want to start it, and wake the whole damn neighborhood up.”

“Well I guess that that is a problem, but its only once right? Ok its bad.” She moved away from the window and sat down on the edge of the bed.

“Was that a car?”

Sara threw herself of off the bed and back to the window, but as he pulled the curtain back, she turned to look at Michael who stood there chuckling to himself. “Do you feel proud of yourself?”

“Just a little bit.”

A moment later, there was a knock on the door, and Michael answered it. “LJ, is everything alright?”

“Yeah, actually its pretty good, but Dad just called, they said they’d be here in about 10 minutes.”

Michael couldn’t help but notice the smile on his nephew’s face. He folded his arms across his chest and raised an eyebrow at him. “What’s going on with you?”

“What are you talking about, nothing is going on.” But he did nothing to convince his Uncle.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t believe a word of that.”

“I didn’t hear you sorry, are you coming downstairs?”

LJ quickly disappeared down the hall, and Michael shook his head.

“Sara, they’re going to be here in a few minutes, or would you just prefer to stand at the window.”

She smiled back at him and followed him downstairs.

They were both surprised when they saw Nika sitting on the sofa, she was holding Liam who was asleep.

But at least it made sense to Michael why LJ was acting like he was.

“Nika, its good to have you back.”

She glanced over her shoulder to where they stood. “Thanks, its good to be back. And now I think that I’m going to take Liam up to bed, its getting late.”

“Are you sure, because Linc and Stuart will be back in a minute.”

As she walked past, LJ leant over and kissed Liam on the cheek, he then waited until Nika had gone upstairs before he turned to face the other two.

“What?”

“Well its just that no one said a word.” Sara pointed out. “Including you.”

“It only just happened.” he answered. He sat back down on the sofa. Sara sitting beside him. “But its good, I’m glad that she’s here.”

“Its very good.”

“What’s very good?”

They all turned around to see Lincoln standing in the doorway.

Sara leapt up of the sofa and threw herself at Lincoln.

“its good to see you too, and don’t think I don’t appreciate the welcome, but uh, why?”

“What do you mean why? You don’t really need to ask that do you?”

He shrugged his shoulders and grinned back at her. “No, I don’t have to ask.”

“So where’s Stu?” LJ asked.

“He’s unloading the cab, will probably take awhile.” he replied. “So, what’s very good?”

“Nika’s back, we’re sorting things out.”

“Good I’m glad.”

“I’m sorry, but where’s the baby.”

Lincoln leant down and picked up the car seat, handing Lorelei over to Sara. “I figured that that was why you were really happy to see me.”

She took Lorelei and sat back down on the sofa. Michael motioned at LJ and the two went outside to help Stuart.

“its good to have you back Stu.”

“Yeah well you have no idea how glad I am to be back.”

Michael grabbed one of the bags from the trunk. “We can take care of this, cos you have something else to do.”

Stuart looked up at him. “Yeah, I was thinking that it wouldn’t be done until tomorrow.”

Michael took the bag from him and motioned towards the house. “No, he finished it today.”

“You sure that you don’t mind?”

Michael shook his head. “No, not at all, we’ve got it.”

Stuart drew in a deep breath and nodded. “Ok, well it has been a damn long time, feels that way at least.”

He made his way into the house, didn’t say a word to Lincoln, just grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the kitchen.

“What the hell are you doing?” Lincoln wanted to know. “Where are we going?”

“Just follow me. Not so difficult right.”

They made their way outside and stood outside of the garage door.

“Ok, really, what’s going on?” He wanted to know. He glanced around the yard, wondering what was happening.

“it’s a surprise. You know the one you’ve been so desperately wanting to know about for the past few weeks.”

“Oh my god, you mean to tell me that I’m actually going to find out what it is. I’m shocked.” he grinned at his boyfriend.

“Yeah, that’s a good one.” Stuart laughed. He leant forward and grabbed the band of Lincoln’s jeans and pulled him forward, they stumbled against the door and Lincoln brought his hands up, resting them on Stuart’s waist, he leant forward, capturing Stuart’s mouth with his.

“Just for the record, this isn’t the surprise.” Stuart grinned against Lincoln’s mouth. He reached behind him and grabbed the handle. “In here.”

“In here you say?”

Stuart pushed him away and turned around, walking into the garage. He had just a second to glance at the bike before Lincoln stepped up to him.

“So, there it is, that’s the surprise.”

“You are fucking well kidding me.”

Stuart turned to look at him, studying him for a moment, he really couldn’t tell if Lincoln meant that as a good, or bad thing. “Linc, Linc.”
